We were asked at the 1130 service on the 30th January 2011 to compare different translations of the ‘Beatitudes’.
Leaving aside the weak ‘Happy are they…’ of the Good News Bible, we could choose between ‘Blessed are the mreciful/peacemakers/etc…’ and ‘God blesses the merciful/peacemakers/etc…’
I’d take the first. The second sounds likea remote report, whereas the first says ‘God is blessing…’ – this is happening now, as we see it, as it happens – God showering out blessing the instant we give him the chance!
